2nd August (Sat)

First stop: Tiananmen.

My first time seeing how blue the sky can be in Beijing. The past few days had been overcast.

People everywhere.

Tiananmen Square was closed to the public, so everyone had to settle for taking photos of the Olympic decorations from far. The policemen on duty said it’d be open from 10am the next day.

Next stop: O2SJN Bookstore. I loved its Chinese name (literally means “Photosynthesis Bookstore”, but it sounds so much more poetic in Chinese) the minute I read about it in Eslite Reader. Was determined to make a trip here, even though it’s kinda out of the way.

Wudaokou station Exit B

The staircase adds to the charm. The first floor stocks bestsellers while the second floor houses academic titles and a small cafe.

Lunch at “Guolin”, a Chinese fast-food restaurant in Wudaokou Shopping Centre near the subway station.
The teriyaki chicken rice reminded me of Yoshinoya, except I had seaweed and egg soup instead of miso soup.
The shopping mall also houses a branch of O2SJN Bookstore, largely similar to the one mentioned earlier, except it has fewer academic titles.

After returning to the hotel to drop off my arm-breaking load of books, I head for Dongsi Station, in search for a second bookshop I’d read about. The platform floor resembles a gigantic chessboard.

Distracted by a lovely gingham bag in a shop display once I’d exited the station. Unfortunately, the shop was closed, and remained closed when I dropped by a second time. The shop assistant in the next shop said they usually open around six, so I made this my last stop before returning to the hotel, and thankfully, ended up spending most of my money here.

Second bookstore of the day. An entire building devoted to paper and print. Very well-stocked, but the sheer size made it difficult to find what I want, so I left with only two books. I much prefer small bookstores where the owners have heavily filtered their selections, hopefully leaving you with titles to your liking.

Passed by a wedding shoot while walking to Wangfujing Street. I still don’t know what this place is, but it looked rather out of place somehow.

My dinner from a takoyaki stall at Wangfujing Snack Street. I’d had this as an afternoon snack the day before, and couldn’t stop thinking about it. Different from the ones you get in Japan, but still delicious. Much more delicious than the ones in Singapore, actually.

My third and final bookstore visit in Beijing. The shop was big but too crowded. Left without buying anything.

Returned to the hotel around a lovely sunset, with Beijing at its gentlest.

Sorted out my shopping for the day. (Yes I’d gone to the supermarket again.)
